Teenagers create an exhaust filter that reduces vehicle emissions

By Amy Stuiver

Electric cars have been a major step toward sustainable mobility. However, they are very expensive, not everyone can afford them, and conventional cars remain the norm. This norm is not something that can easily be removed from our society, which is why a new solution was needed, so that the cars we use today can still be made as sustainable as possible.

GoGreen Filter offered a solution. GoGreen Filter is an initiative and technology company focused on reducing CO₂ emissions from vehicles. According to initial test results, the filter could reduce vehicle emissions by as much as 74%. This represents a significant contribution to improved air quality and the reduction of greenhouse gases worldwide.

How the filter works

GoGreen Filter is a biological car filter that is placed on a vehicle’s exhaust. Just like in trees, the filter contains microalgae. These algae absorb CO₂ and produce oxygen through photosynthesis. When exhaust gases flow through the filter, the algae capture a portion of the CO₂. With the help of sunlight and water, the algae convert this CO₂ into oxygen and biomass. The oxygen is released back into the air, and the biomass can be reused, for example as fertilizer or biofuel. Not bad for such a small algae.

For now, only prototypes created by the inventors exist, and the product is not yet available to consumers. The inventors do aim to make it available in the future, but are currently focused on developing the product as thoroughly as possible.

Inventors

The idea came from two high school students. Rohan Kapoor and Jack Reichert developed the concept while living in Unionville, Pennsylvania. Together, they shared a passion for environmental innovation and sustainable technology. Motivated by this, they began experimenting with ways to reduce CO₂ emissions from vehicles without requiring people to replace their cars. This is how the GoGreen Filter came to life. Their work received recognition from several organisations, including Ashoka’s Young Change-makers program and local innovation awards in the United States.

We are making progress

It is a great initiative by these two young inventors. Their goal is to make the filter as affordable as possible, so it can be accessible to everyone. This way, living sustainably does not become a luxury, as is often the case with electric cars.

Because the GoGreen Filter is affordable for consumers and does not require expensive infrastructure, it becomes an attractive investment. Rohan and Jack show that sustainable living can become the norm and that it does not have to involve a huge step. As consumers, this gives us peace of mind. Even without spending a lot of money, we can still choose sustainability. It feels good to be able to live more sustainably.
