Inundation

Produced by Feather Films: The story of Kinan, a young refugee confronting his traumatic fear of water. Discover how storytelling can add nuance in the refugee debate.

Film process

Together with Feather Films, director and screenwriter Ilia ten Böhmer approached Inundation as a fully immersive, sensory experience. The story unfolds through Kinan’s fragmented memories, presenting his perspective in a way that feels authentic yet poetic. The film is built around the constant presence of water—visually, sonically, and emotionally—turning it into a metaphorical character that represents Kinan’s trauma and healing journey.

To ensure authenticity, Feather Films included real Syrian refugees, including the lead actor, Kinan, who delivered a remarkable debut performance despite having no prior acting experience. Every discipline, from cinematography to sound design, worked collaboratively to create a cohesive, resonating piece of storytelling.

Idea

Inundation tells the poetic story of Kinan, a young Syrian refugee who confronts his trauma and fear of water during his first swimming lessons in the Netherlands. By focusing on this deeply personal journey, the film invites viewers to see refugees not through broad narratives, but as individuals with unique stories. Ilia: "I hope everyone remembers the story of this little boy whenever they think about refugees, helping to make their opinions maybe a little more nuanced."

Design

Memories don't follow a logical timeline—it’s experienced in fragments, linked by emotions rather than chronology. To reflect this, the narrative structure mirrors how memories are relived: short, impactful moments tied together by emotional connections. The film’s immersive storytelling invites viewers to step into Kinan’s mind, experiencing his fear, resilience, and first steps in letting go of the past.

Water as a character

Water is more than a setting—it’s a central character in Inundation. From condensation and rain in the visuals to underwater-inspired soundscapes and rhythmic “water music,” it’s present in every frame. This omnipresence creates a sensory layer that symbolizes Kinan’s trauma and growth. The fragmented storytelling further amplifies the emotional weight, allowing audiences to empathize with his journey.

Reception (until now)

  1. Inundation has been selected as one of the Dutch Shorts by SEE NL and is currently being submitted to international film festivals.

  2. The Nederlands Filmfonds praised the film in their feedback as "a cinematic experience," highlighting its artistry and emotional depth.

  3. Beyond festivals, the film aims to spark conversations in schools, community centers, and advocacy platforms, fostering empathy and understanding for refugees through education and storytelling.
